The History and Evolution of Tattoo Culture in Liverpool

Brief Introduction to Tattoo Culture in Liverpool

Liverpool, a city known for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant arts scene, has a long and fascinating history with tattooing. The tradition of body art in Liverpool reflects the city’s diverse and dynamic character, with influences ranging from its maritime roots to its world-famous music scene. Over the decades, tattoo culture in Liverpool has evolved significantly, becoming a prominent part of the local lifestyle and artistic expression.

The Significance of Liverpool Tattoo Shops in the Cultural Landscape

Liverpool tattoo shops play a crucial role in this cultural tapestry, acting as hubs of creativity and community. These establishments not only provide a space for artistic expression but also foster a sense of belonging and identity among residents. Tattoo shops in Liverpool are more than just places to get inked; they are vital components of the city’s cultural fabric, offering a unique blend of tradition, innovation, and personal storytelling.

Mad Time Tattoo

Located in the heart of the city, Mad Time Tattoo has earned a reputation for excellence, attracting both locals and visitors seeking unique and high-quality tattoos. The studio’s dedication to artistry and customer satisfaction has made it a cornerstone of Liverpool’s tattoo community, contributing significantly to the city’s vibrant tattoo culture.

Early Beginnings of Tattooing in Liverpool

The origins of tattooing in Liverpool can be traced back to its bustling port days in the 19th and early 20th centuries. As a major maritime hub, Liverpool was frequented by sailors who often brought back tattoos from their voyages, marking significant events, and achievements, or simply showcasing exotic designs. These early tattoos were often simple and practical, serving as both personal mementoes and markers of identity within the seafaring community.

First Tattoo Shops in Liverpool

The establishment of the first tattoo shops in Liverpool marked a significant turning point in the city’s tattoo culture. One of the earliest known tattoo studios was located near the docks, catering primarily to sailors. Over time, as tattooing became more popular, these shops began to attract a broader clientele. Early tattoo artists, such as the renowned George Burchett, known as the “King of Tattooists,” played a pivotal role in popularising the art form in Liverpool and beyond. These pioneers set the stage for the rich and diverse tattoo culture that the city enjoys today.

Tattoo Shops from the Mid-20th Century

The mid-20th century saw a significant expansion in the number of tattoo shops in Liverpool. This period was characterised by a growing acceptance of tattoos in mainstream society, influenced by various cultural movements and changing social norms. The demand for tattoos surged, leading to the establishment of numerous new studios across the city. These shops offered a wide range of styles and designs, reflecting the eclectic tastes of Liverpool’s residents.

Influential Artists

Several influential tattoo artists have left an indelible mark on the Liverpool tattoo scene. Figures such as Jay Hutton, known from the TV show “Tattoo Fixers,” and other local legends have significantly shaped the art form in the city. Their innovative techniques and distinctive styles have attracted a loyal following and inspired a new generation of tattoo artists. These artists have contributed to Liverpool’s reputation as a hub for high-quality and creative tattoo work.

Cultural Influences:

Liverpool’s maritime history, coupled with its iconic music scene, has had a profound influence on local tattoo trends. Nautical themes, such as anchors and ships, remain popular, paying homage to the city’s seafaring heritage. The rise of the Beatles and the subsequent musical revolution also left its mark, with music-inspired tattoos becoming a significant trend. Additionally, various subcultures, from punk to rockabilly, have embraced tattooing as a form of self-expression, further enriching Liverpool’s diverse tattoo culture.

Tattoo Aftercare and Best Practices

Importance of Aftercare

Proper aftercare is crucial for ensuring that a new tattoo heals correctly and maintains its vibrancy. Following the recommended aftercare procedures helps prevent infections and other complications, ensuring that your tattoo remains a beautiful and permanent piece of art.

Expert Tips from Liverpool Tattoo Shops

Liverpool tattoo shops, including Mad Time Tattoo, emphasise the importance of adhering to aftercare guidelines. Here’s a comprehensive aftercare guide based on their expert advice:

  1. Initial Care
    • Keep the Dressing On After getting your tattoo, your artist will cover it with a sterile dressing. Keep this dressing on for at least four hours to protect the tattoo from bacteria and other contaminants.
  2. Cleaning Your Tattoo
    • Remove the Dressing: After four hours, carefully remove the dressing.
    • Wash with Warm Soapy Water: Gently clean the tattoo with warm soapy water. Avoid using harsh soaps or scrubbing the area. Pat dry with a clean towel or paper towel.
  3. Applying Aftercare Cream
    • Use Tattoo-Specific Cream: Apply a small amount of tattoo-specific aftercare cream, such as EasyTattoo. Gently rub it into the tattooed area. Do this 5-7 times a day to keep the tattoo moisturised and to aid the healing process.
  4. Healing Process
    • Monitor the Healing: The tattoo may take up to two weeks to heal, though in some cases it might take longer. Keep an eye on the tattoo to ensure it is healing properly and consult your tattoo artist if you notice any signs of infection or other issues.

Do’s and Don’ts for Tattoo Aftercare

To ensure your tattoo heals well, follow these do’s and don’ts:

  • Do’s
    • Keep it Clean and Moisturised: Regularly clean and apply aftercare cream to your tattoo.
    • Wear Loose Clothing: Avoid tight clothing that may rub against the tattooed area.
    • Stay Hydrated and Eat Healthily: Proper hydration and nutrition can support the healing process.
  • Don’ts
    • Avoid Submerging in Water: Do not soak your tattoo in water. Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, and saunas until the tattoo is fully healed.
    • Don’t Pick or Scratch: Itching and scabbing are normal parts of the healing process. Do not pick at scabs or scratch the tattoo as this can lead to scarring or loss of colour.
    • No Sunbeds or Direct Sun Exposure: Protect your tattoo from direct sunlight and avoid tanning beds. UV rays can cause the tattoo to fade and may hinder the healing process.
    • Avoid Harsh Products: Do not use products like Vaseline, E45, or Sudocrem on your tattoo as they can clog pores and cause issues with healing.

I met with Judi today this was my first time visiting Mad Time Piercing shop. Judi was lovely, so helpful and caring. I had my Daith pierced elsewhere and was having trouble with a keyloid and trying to change the pericing. Judi advised me to come by to take a look which she did. Judi gave great advise and i felt comfortable and happy with her suggestions. Thanks Judi and i look forward to visiting again for my new piercing. 😊

Just went in the store to get my conch piercing changed, as I had a bad experience when I first got it pierced. Paige was the loveliest person, she was very helpful and kind and even chased me out the store as I left my original earring in there! Would 100% recommend. Also, very clean inside and felt extremely welcome.

Juvif did an amazing job at covering my partners surgical scars. All the staff were lovely and very accommodating. He can't wait for his next session to finish it off, already his confidence has improved just by looking in the mirror at something he chose to have rather than seeing his past trauma (4 brain surgeries). Truly thankful and can't recommend enough 😃😃😃

Got tattooed by Natalie and I couldn’t be more pleased. She did an amazing job with colours, lines and shadows. Henry and Natalie were very easy to talk, give advice and really care about customer’s comfort. I’m extremely happy with both the tattoo and the experience itself. Would go here again without hesitation - have 6 tattoos done by them already 🙌
